Champions Trophy 2025

India started the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with a strong win against Bangladesh on Thursday. The team’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, played well at the start. However, Virat Kohli, who batted at No. 3, struggled and didn’t score many runs. Rohit made 41 runs from 36 balls, while Kohli scored only 22 from 38 balls.

Even though India won, their coach, Gautam Gambhir, received a clear message from former coach Anil Kumble. Kumble suggested that the team should start thinking about replacing senior players like Rohit and Kohli with younger ones for the future.

Anil Kumble, who was also a coach before, believes that it is the coach’s job to make difficult decisions. He thinks Gautam Gambhir must decide when to replace older, experienced players with younger ones as the team changes over time.

Kumble said on ESPN Cricinfo that this tournament is very important for the coach because he has to make tough decisions about replacing senior players with new ones. He added that it is the coach’s responsibility to make such difficult choices.

Anil Kumble said that this tournament will help decide the future of senior players and when India should make changes to the team. He believes that tough decisions should be made as soon as possible, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

Although the 2027 World Cup is still far away, the Champions Trophy is the last big 50-over tournament before that. Kumble thinks discussions about some players’ futures should begin after this tournament ends.

Kumble said that for any World Cup, a team should play at least 20-25 matches together to build a strong understanding of the game and teamwork. After the Champions Trophy, India should start planning for the 2027 World Cup. The big question is whether senior players will still be part of the team or if younger players should be given a chance to lead in shorter formats.

He pointed out that Gambhir has many young players to choose from and should slowly start preparing for the next World Cup. In T20 cricket, India has done well, and Suryakumar Yadav has been a good captain. Since the next World Cup is still two years away, the new players need to play together regularly to develop their strategies, understand batting positions, and improve teamwork.
